Joe Scanlan - Passing through

With Joe Scanlan (born in 1961 in Circleville, Ohio), a further artist has been recruited to design a long-term project for the large, spectacular space beneath the glass dome of K21, a project that takes into account the specific qualities of the space and exploits them in a characteristic manner.

Passing Through consists of two parts. On display inside a pavilion - a lightweight construction developed by Scanlan in collaboration with two architects - are selected works by Scanlan, along with works by other artists. The design of the pavilion allows it to be quickly and easily transformed into other spatial configurations. By means of regular, partial reconstructions, the pavilion “wanders” in the course of time through the four wings of the domed space.

Description of the Museum

K21 features international art from 1980. With large and important works by Marcel Broodthaers und Nam June Paik, it sums up specific points of origin in the 60s and 70s. Having been assembled since the 80s, the collection now juxtaposes works which give outstanding visual form significant aspects of art since the beginnings of postmodernism.
