27 September 2008 – 11 January 2009 Lawrence Weiner - AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEEThe exhibition Lawrence Weiner – AS FAR AS THE EYE CAN SEE is a retrospective on the oeuvre of one of the cofounders (born in 1942) of so-called Conceptual Art. There has not been a comparative show of this radical, complex, epoch-making and influential work since 1988. This show has already taken place in the Whitney Museum in New York and the Museum of Contemporary Art (MoCA) in Los Angeles. The European presentation will now occur at K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen in Düsseldorf. The works on display range from the paintings produced in the 1960’s to the innovative “Specific and General Works” which use language and are characterised as follows in Weiner’s so-called “Declaration of Intent”: 1. The artist may construct the piece 2. The piece may be fabricated 3. The piece need not be built. Each being equal and consistent with the intent of the artist, the decision as to condition rests with the receiver upon the occasion of receivership. About 70 of these language-based works from 1968 to the immediate present will be shown in different forms of realisation in this exhibition. Furthermore, a wide selection of Weiner’s drawings, multiples and publications will be on display. A programme with a choice of his records and films is also planned.
