13 February 2008 – 4 May 2009 Facets of Modernity. - The Changing Image of ManIn the period around 1880, sculptures by Auguste Rodin and Edgar Degas confronted those who viewed them with a new form of emotional expression, a new subjectivity and a radical portrayal of the fragmentary in human existence. In doing so, they shaped the development of figural sculpture for more than a century. The examples selected for this exhibition from among the holdings of the Dresden Skulpturensammlung, complemented by several loaned objects, demonstrate this in many facets. The exhibition features sculptures by Wilhelm Lehmbruck, Carl Lohse, Hermann Blumenthal, Gustav Seitz, Fritz Wotruba, Wieland Förster and others. In portrait statues and busts, and in a new form of ideal ‘Ausdrucksplastik’ (expressive sculpture), the exhibition demonstrates the changing development of artistic ideals during the course of the 20th century. This includes correspondences between figural and non-figural plastic art in sculptures of the art informel style by Emil Cimiotti and Bernard Schultze. The chronologically grouped works reflect 20th-century German history in an astonishing way. The most recent works in the exhibition are by Birgit Dieker and Martin Honert. Their associative conceptual treatment of figural sculpture again constitutes a radical innovation in modern art. This exhibition is the third in a series of interim presentations by the Skulpturensammlung in the Dresden Zwinger whilst the Albertinum is undergoing construction work.AddressSkulpturensammlung (Albertinum)Albertinum, Brühlsche Terrasse 1067 Dresden phone +49 351 49 14 20 00 http://www.skd-dresden.de Opening HoursBecause of substantial restructuring and new building of a depository the Albertinum is closed from January 3, 2006 on.Description of the MuseumThe Sculpture Collection presents works of more than five millennia - from the ancient cultures of the Mediterranean and the Near East to all epochs of European sculpture from the Early Middle Ages to the present. |
