Proceeding from the idealized myth of Rome as the "eternal city" or "cradle of Western civilization," the exhibition and accompanying program establish a differentiated viewpoint onto the visual, social and urban structures of the city. In recognition of the inherently constructed and abbreviated perspective of exhibitions which present a nation, a country or a city, the Kunstverein has taken for the theme of its exhibition the view from outside. Instead of designating a subjective selection of Italian artists as representatives of their city, Rome Report presents only non-Italian artists who have spent an extensive period of time in Rome, or who thematize the city in their works for other reasons. The artists' respective views of various details are not only determined by the new urban site but also mirror their own cultural and social orientations.
