Luc Tuymans. When springs comes

belgian artist luc tuymans’s (*1958) paintings are inspired by political and historical events. with a subdued colour palette typical for the artist, he creates paintings of collective memories based on a representation: motifs from everyday life and motifs from german history. in paintings of great stillness and emptiness, tuymans leaves room for the sublime, for a subtle discomfort. having taken part in documenta 11 in kassel (2002) and having had retrospectives at the kunstsammlung nrw in dusseldorf and tate modern in London in 2004, the haus der kunst pays tribute to luc tuymans with a large solo exhibition on the occasion of his 50th birthday. in addition to a representative selection of paintings from the last 30 years, the artist has conceived a new project specially for the haus der Kunst.

Description of the Museum

Built in 1932 as substitute for the legendary Münchner Glaspalast, after Hitler's seizure of power the exhibitions "Entarteten Kunst" (Degenerated Art) became infamous. Since 1949 there are exhibited many great retrospectives
