robert rauschenberg - travelling '70–'76

during the 1950s, the american artist robert rauschenberg (*1925) began to explore the boundaries between painting and sculpture by integrating found objects into his works – light bulbs, leftover wallpaper, car tires, newspaper clippings, radios. ‘combine paintings’ and the free standing ‘combinings’, which made Rauschenberg internationally famous, came into being; along with andy warhol and roy lichtenstein, he is seen as a pioneer of american pop art. an artist’s surroundings, everyday objects and parts of his or her life, continue to flow into rauschenberg’s works; also and particularly the ‘insignificant’ had a dignity, a secret. in the 1970s rauschenberg predominantly travelled to europe, israel and india, where he collaborated intensively with a.o. photographers, artists, artisans and musicians, and where he opened up to new forms of expression and materials. the exhibition ‘travelling ’70–’76’, the title of which rauschenberg himself selected, puts the emphasis on exactly those series and works, which were the result of his personal experiences and time during his travels.

Built in 1932 as substitute for the legendary Münchner Glaspalast, after Hitler's seizure of power the exhibitions "Entarteten Kunst" (Degenerated Art) became infamous. Since 1949 there are exhibited many great retrospectives
