Fritz Wotruba (1907-1975)

Fritz Wotruba (1907-1975) numbers amongst the most prominent sculptors in Europe, and ever since the 1930s has retained his appreciation by museums and collectors through major exhibitions in Europe and America. The unparalleled attention his oeuvre received during his lifetime from authors, poets, musicians and philosophers, close contemporaries and friends attest to the esteem enjoyed by the Austrian artist, who experts rank alongside Henry Moore, Marino Marini, Alberto Giacometti and Germaine Richier as one of the most important representatives of modern sculpture. In addition, Wotruba has trained entire generations of sculptors as a professor at the Vienna Art Academy.

The exhibition in the Lehmbruck Museum deliberately focuses on the “most pared-down˝ media Wotruba availed himself of: drawings and stone sculptures. Taking as the starting point the earliest stone, the “Torso˝ from 1928/29, and drawings from 1925 onwards the tension of this oeuvre becomes palpable. The collection of other important stones and some 120 drawings, most being shown for the first time, provides an opportunity to follow Wotruba‘s development over several decades, one unprecedented in the history of 20th century sculpture from the human figure through to architecture as a sensual metamorphosis.
