16 October 2008 – 11 January 2009 CLEMENS VON WEDEMEYER PRESENTSIn the last few decades, the presence of film in contemporary art exhibition circles has acquired significant importance. The most important experimental filmmakers have started to develop their work by taking advantage of their projection outside the commercial cinemas. This has given them the opportunity to develop their experimental capacity and to work in such a way that it allowed films to include its spatial installation. Clemens von Wedemeyer’s work (b. 1974; Göttingen, Germany) is a good example of this capacity of reflection on filmmaking itself: his films speak to the spectator about the relationship between spectator and film. This spectator-film relationship is the core theme of his exhibition and connecting theme of his five pieces. On the one hand, Die Pröbe and Rien de Tout address theatricality. In the case of Rien de Tout, made jointly with Maya Schweizer, the casting process for a Beckett play in a Parisian suburb is used as a way to reveal the fine line separating reality and fiction: the narrative construction of reality through acting. Die Pröbe, his latest film (financed by the Guggenheim Foundation), shows the backstage of a political rally where the winner of the election is rehearsing his resignation speech. The construction of this politician in self-denial shows how the only way of interacting with the world is through acting.
