7 September 2007 – 25 November 2007 Philip Guston - Works on PaperPhilip Guston numbers among the most significant and influential American artists of the 20th century. With his works, executed in a broad diversity of styles, he bridges the gap between abstract expressionism and a graphic type of realism. Originally established as a painter, he soon turned into an outstanding draughtsman. Pure linearity had a cathartic effect on him, provoking contemplative reflection and artistic reorientation. Last, but not least, drawing helped him overcome his creative crisis of the 1960s.Because of his great variety of expression and his versatility he also gained recognition in Europe; however, his work has rarely been shown in exhibitions. With Philip Guston. Works on Paper, comprising 92 examples of his work, the Albertina is now presenting for the first time a comprehensive display of the artist’s graphic oeuvre. The exhibition has been compiled in cooperation with the Kunstmuseum Bonn, the Louisiana Museum in Humlebæk/Denmark, the Staatliche Graphische Sammlung in Munich, and the Morgan Library & Museum in New York. Opening HoursMonday-Sunday 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., Wednesday till 9 p.m.Description of the MuseumThe Albertina accommodates one of the largest and most precious graphic art collections in the world. There are drawings and prints dating from all major epochs, ranging from late gothic to contemporanean art. |
