Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller (1793-1865)

After almost two decades, an exhibition is yet again dedicated exclusively to the work of
Ferdinand Georg Waldmüller. A champion in the most important genres of his time – landscape,
portrait, genre painting and still life – Waldmüller is one of the leading Austrian artists of the
Biedermeier period. Thanks to the realistically rendering diverse motifs in the expressive force
and the outstanding level of pictorial quality, he surpassed the ideals of his époque and gained
recognition far beyond national borders. Beside works from the Belvedere collections, which own
the world’s largest collection of Waldmüller works, prestigious loans will be on show.

Description of the Museum

The collections go from the Middle Ages until the contemporanean art.

The museum is situated in the Schloss Belvedere, which was built by Prince Eugen von Savoyen as summer residence. The Belvedere includes two palace buildings: The Upper and the Lower Belvedere.
