MARKUS PRACHENSKY - EARLY AND LATE WORKS

The exhibition of about 80 works, from the Essl Collection’s holdings and loans, presents mainly the artist’s early and late work and the significance of the colour red in his paintings. Current works and pictures created in the last 12 years – including rarely seen works on paper – are contrasted with early paintings from the 1950s and 60s. The earliest works on show, “Rouges différents sur noir – Liechtenstein”, are from 1956 and the most recent series “Swing the Provence” was only completed in the spring and summer of 2007. The latter are fresh from the studio and presented to the public for the first time. Since the artist has increasingly picked up on elements from his early period in his late work, the exhibition encourages comparisons and the attentive viewer may find similarities as well as subtle differences between the individual groups of works.

The show is supported by a photography-film project by ARTV.at (Association for the Documentation of Art): the photographer Gerald Y Plattner shows photos of the artist in his studio from 2005. The filmmakers Claudia Auer and Ferdinand “Marschall” Karl present a film about the artist and his works focusing on Markus Prachensky as a human being and providing direct insights into his lifestyle and working manner.
