HELD TOGETHER WITH WATER - Art from the Verbund Collection

With the title “HELD TOGETHER WITH
WATER”, the MAK shows for the first time the Verbund Collection which was founded in 2004 and in essence unifies key positions of American and European art since the early 1970’s. One of the two key focuses of the collection is closely linked to the term “performance”, combining almost the entire early photography of Cindy Sherman, who in her art takes images created by the media as her theme, questioning not the media itself, rather its effects on our self-perception, with works by Valie Export and Birgit Jürgenssen. Both artists are preoccupied with feminist critique of the social construction of female images. This part of the collection is complemented by the works of Francesca Woodman, Sarah Lucas, Urs Lüthi, Gilbert & George and Gillian Wearing. The second key element of the collection deals with the theme of “spaces/places”, and ranges from the works of Gordon Matta-Clark, which intervenes in existing architectural structures in a deconstructivist sense, Fred Sandback’s minimalist space drawings constructed from fine threads, to the organically formed, nylonlike objects filled with various materials by Ernest Neto. Similar works in this context are by Louise Lawler, Bernd & Hilla Becher, Jeff Wall, Teresa Hubbard & Alexander Birchler, Simon Starling, Janet Cardiff & George Bures Miller, Gabriel Orozco, and Loan Nguyen. This is a debut display for the Verbund Collection at the MAK and will be extended by one specific space intervention.
