Sigmar Polke

Sigmar Polke, born in 1941 in Oels/Lower Silesia, moved to West Germany at the age of 12. He formulated a completely independent pictorial language which, in playing with contradictions and cliché images, leads to humorous commentaries and puzzle pictures revealing a humanist and culturally critical ethos. Polke became known as a co-founder of Capitalist Realism, an art movement that, like Pop Art, referred on the one hand to everyday life and, on the other, wished to be understood as an ironic variation of Socialist Realism.
