25 January 2008 – 20 April 2008 Jörg Immendorff: What painting can mean to usWith a highly personal exhibition of works stemming exclusively from the Essl Collection, the collector-couple Agnes and Karlheinz Essl will pay tribute to the German artist JörgImmendorff, to whom they were linked by long-standing ties of friendship, and who died in June 2007. Jörg Immendorff is counted among the most outstanding artists of the post-1945 period, who invariably adopted an unambiguous attitude as both a politically and socially active person and as an artist. On display will be more than 70 works, from paintings to drawings and sculptures, along with texts and letters, covering his early oeuvre dating from the 1960s, through the large political canvases of the 80s on to his late works, which frequently addressed existential issues. >In meinem Salon ist Österreich< is a series of works specially painted for the collector- couple. The centrepiece shows the collectors amid renowned Austrian artists, many of whom were among Immendorff’s friends. This is rounded off by a first showing of the series of 32 preliminary sketches.
