Julius and Erich Wolfgang Korngold - From Sound of Vienna to the Sound of Hollywood

Practically no family reflects the Viennese music tradition in the early 20th century better than the Korngolds.
The father, Julius Korngold, chief music critic of the Neue Freie Presse, was one of the most powerful and feared critics of his time, who fought indefatigably against the “anarchy” of the nine-tone school. His son Erich was a musical child prodigy, whose success could not ultimately be influenced or controlled by his father. In his
attempts to do so, Julius not only damaged his reputation as a critic, but also prevented Erich Wolfgang’s works from being given a fair reception. His overflowing love for his father forced Erich to embark on a musical path
that would give him independence from his father but also raised questions about his role as a contemporary modern composer.
