A BOOK IN THE TRUE SENSE - Johannes Gachnang in his Role as a Publisher

When Johannes Gachnang (1939—2005) founded the publishing house Gachnang & Springer together with Berlin publisher Rudolf Springer in 1983, he expanded his activities as artist and curator to that of publisher. His concern above all was to create an appropriate relationship between the formal means of book design and the spiritual atmosphere of the printed work. “It’s not about style, it’s about atmosphere.”This exhibition is devoted to the personality of Johannes Gachnang — founder of the Institute for Contemporary Art at the Vienna Academy of Fine Arts — and his influence as a publisher. Focus will mainly be on his close ties to such artists as Karel Appel, Meret Oppenheim, Georg Baselitz, Per Kirkeby, Sigmar Polke, Jörg Immendorff, Peter Kogler, Günther Förg or Luciano Fabro.
