China - Facing Reality

China - Facing Reality - will show a representative selection of more recent Chinese art that concentrates on the history of the various realisms and their relationship to social realities. From bourgeois realism towards the end of the 19th century to socialist “revolutionary” realism, an ideological appropriation of realistic art had taken place. Criticism of this was to be heard from the milieu of more recent intellectual and individual freedoms after Mao’s death (1976). Thus, as a consequence of the tragic events in Tiananmen Square, the so-called “cynical realism” in painting (Fan Lijun, Yue Minjuin, Zhang Xiaogangs and others) turned to the feeling of individual powerlessness as well as the loss of social utopias and perspectives with self-irony and aggressive humour.
