Peter Kogler - 79-08

Since the early 1980s, after turning his back on the new painting of the time, Peter Kogler has made media and computer technology the basis of his installative and spatially oriented works. Even in his early works which mediated between picture and object, he made references to the increasing pervasiveness of media-mediation
and the privileging of the scopic in life by confronting the perfectionism of the new
technologies with physical and organic motifs or blending the two with each other.
In the process Kogler builds on the filmic techniques of modernity and has chosen
the ant, as a symmetrically built living creature that is simultaneously organised in a
labyrinthine way, as a logo-like, central subject for his art. The references to space and architecture, discernible from the beginning of his oeuvre, has led to numerous internationally recognised works in public spaces and their architecture. The exhibition will make it possible to perceive new connections between individual
work periods and work groups because its scope includes early pictures and objects which have never been shown before through to a space-modulating computer projection specially made for the exhibition room.
