David Douglas Duncan. Picasso

In February 1956 David Douglas Duncan (born 1916) entered the life of Pablo Picasso (1881-1973). Picasso received the American photographer sitting in his bathtub being looked after by his last partner and second wife, Jacqueline. A close friendship that lasted until Picasso’s death developed from this initial encounter. Picasso’s villa in the South of France became Duncan’s second home and he accompanied the artist during the final creative period of his life. Picasso shared family moments as well as the intimate areas of his artistic creativity with Duncan. The photographer became the quiet observer of Picasso’s oeuvre and documented the creation of a series of ceramics and paintings in Picasso’s studio. Amongst them was the famous portrait of Jacqueline, his last muse. With his Leica Duncan also captured the rare, evocative moments of quiet and contemplation in the life of this restless artist.

The exhibition „David Douglas Duncan. PICASSO“ consists of 110 vintage prints and gives an unexpected look at Picasso’s manifold personality and presents the artist in an unusual role: as a humorous host and friend, as a reserved husband as well as a child-like play companion for Paloma and Claude who allowed himself to be caught up in the mood of the young even at an advanced age.
Touching snapshots from Picasso’s private life radiate warmth, intimacy and vitality, they present a Picasso known only to a few people during his lifetime.

The highlight of the exhibition is a Picasso collage from 1957. One of Duncan’s close-ups of Picasso’s eyes becomes a self-portrait as an owl through the painter’s witty and bizarre idea. A photo series documents the creation of this joint work between photographer and artist.
