HONORÉ DAUMIER. ZEICHNUNGEN UND AQUARELLE

Among the celebrated graphic artists of the 19th century, Honoré Daumier (1808-1879) was one of the most prolific and innovative. From 7 December 2007 to 24 February 2008, Kunsthaus Zürich will show a broad array of drawings and watercolours: various facets observed in the worldly French capital hang next to scenes from the everyday life of simple working folk, while illustrations for Cervantes’ Don Quixote and various literary products of Daumier’s restless, revolutionary age are grouped together in a cabinet exhibition.

For Daumier, drawing was a means to understanding what made the modern world tick. He was aided in this pursuit by his extraordinary feeling for the reproduction of facial expressions, attitudes and gestures by means of lines, as well as by his capacity for conjuring up space with light and shade, skills every bit as useful to him as his oft-cited ability to evoke colours and ideas in the minds of those who viewed his black-and-white creations. Daumier drew all his figures from memory.

Description of the Museum

The Kunsthaus houses one of Switzerland’s most important collections. The most important collection of works by Alberto Giacometti has been on display in bright new rooms since June 2002. In other rooms there are exquisite Medieval sculptures and altar panels, exceptional Flemish and Italian Baroque painting, and the zenith of Swiss 19th and 20th century art represented by the best known works of artists such as Johann Heinrich Fuseli and Ferdinand Hodler.

The collection includes also the largest collection of works by Edvard Munch outside Norway, important paintings by Picasso and the Expressionists Kokoschka, Beckmann and Corinth. There is also a significant group of works by Claude Monet.
