Gottfried Honegger

Gottfried Honegger, internationally one of the most significant concrete artists of his generation, free spirit, eunconventional thinker and co-founder of our foundation, is celebrating his 90th birthday this year. To commemorate this important milestone, Haus Konstruktiv is staging a comprehensive retrospective of his wide- ranging oeuvre.

It is the first time that Honegger has been treated so extensively in a Swiss museum. Extending over three floors, the exhibition at Haus Konstruktiv will present the artistic cosmos of Gottfried Honegger from the late 1930s to the present. Thanks to carefully selected loans from private collections, visitors will gain superlative insights into the fascinating and complex work of the artist and be able to trace the path he took from the early Neo-Impressionistic paintings up to the reduced geometric compositions. Numerous explanatory text panels will elucidate Honegger’s ideas on painting and sculpture and situate his work in an art historical context. This also includes his friendships and encounters with Richard Paul Lohse, Max Bill and Camille Graeser in Switzerland as well as with Mark Rothko, Barnett Newman and Clifford Still in the USA. While these figures certainly all yielded a formative influence on Honegger’s development, he maintained a searching inquisitiveness that was all his own.
