FANTASTIC POSTCARDS - The Playful Element of Photography in the Medium of the Postcard

"Fantastic Postcards" examines the everyday item "postcard", which was the first mass media article to make a major contribution to the democratic dissemination of images and photography in 1900. This was before magazines and books. On the example of 450 specimens, the exhibition shows the great and widespread pleasure that was taken in experimentation in postcard production, where elements of popular culture mingled with the photographic image. Iconographic models from the 19th and 20th centuries will be presented in each of the thematic chapters. The central aspect of the exhibition shows the great interaction between fantasy postcards and the avant-garde art of the 1920s and 30s, the Dadaists and the Surrealists. Paul Eluard, André Breton and Salvador Dalí were, for example, enthusiastic collectors of fantasy postcards. Other artists such as Hannah Höch, Herbert Bayer and Man Ray used existing postcards as material or models for their own work. Some of the postcards are shown parallel with the well-known works of avant-garde art. The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue.
