ZOE LEONARD - Midcareer Overview

For over twenty years, Zoe Leonard (who was born in Liberty, New York, in 1961) has lived a life of thoughtful wandering, and perceptive observation. She has roamed through nature and culture, (city) landscapes and museums, on her search for signs that will tell her more about the structure and conditions of nature and culture, about their contrasts and parallels, and their mutual associations. Leonard's views (from the car, aeroplane or helicopter, as well as close-ups taken standing on the ground or from a bird's eye angle), on the water, in a mirror, her images of female anatomical wax figures, of fashion shows, trees, fences and hunting trophies do not purport to be image creations, but precise, attentive discoveries, presentations and memories - by means of symbols in frugal black-and-white that open up an area of visual thought, and in it our visible world. At documenta 9 in 1992, Zoe Leonard's conceptual placement of black-and-white photographs of female genitalia in the midst of a male-dominated museum and painting context caused a sensation. The political aspects of her work formulate a kind of background for her on-going analysis of form. In 2007, Zoe Leonard will present her 370-part work "Analogue" at documenta 12 in Kassel - colour photographs of display windows, shop fronts and bundles of merchandise that give a visual form to the global changes in the details of the shop around the corner. Parts of this work will also be shown in Winterthur, in this case integrated in her work since the early 1980s. This mid-career work overview will be accompanied by a book.
