Christoph Schlingensief - Querverstümmelung

Christoph Schlingensief (born 1960, lives and works in Berlin) works in areas of artistic activity that cut a swathe through the arts - from filmmaker to political action artist, from theatre director to actor, from painter to columnist. In attempting to give his activities a general term one arrives at the word universal artist. Even in his early films his aesthetic principles were clearly apparent: by means of visual and acoustic overlapping and excessive demands on the medium, classic narrative cinema was overturned and new levels of perception disclosed. The total irritation leads to a new form of concentration, demanding that the observer use his abilities to make a decision, accompanied simultaneously by the principle of the refusal of illusionism. To construe such border-transgressing scenarios - most of which take place at every imaginable level - as a perverted sweeping blow, plainly snatches far too briefly at elucidation. In his creations Christoph Schlingensief is one of the very few artists who examines, extremely precisely, the possibilities of an aesthetic of evil.
