1 March 2008 – 25 May 2008 EUGÈNE ATGET – Paris c. 1900 (Retrospective)To mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of the great French photographer Eugène Atget (1857–1927), Fotomuseum Winterthur is hosting a retrospective exhibition of his life’s work. In pictures taken between 1897 and 1927, Eugène Atget captured the atmosphere of Old Paris like no other photographer before or since. Using a heavy glass-plate camera and tripod, with 18 x 24 cm glass negatives, he documented every facet of the city: the narrow alleyways and yards of the historic centre with its old buildings, some of them already earmarked for demolition, the magnificent villas of the pre-revolution era, the bridges and quais on the banks of the Seine, the shops and their window displays. Atget’s strong contrasts of light and dark, shadows and overlapping forms, lend his photographs a sculptural quality. To this day, his oeuvre continues to set the benchmark for much of twentieth century art and for conceptual photography as a whole. The exhibition, mounted by the Bibliothèque nationale de France, comprises some 350 works and is accompanied by a publication (in German or French). Curators: Sylvie Aubenas and Guillaume Le Gall.AddressFotomuseum WinterthurGrüzenstrasse 44 8400 Winterthur phone +41 52 233 60 86 http://www.fotomuseum.ch Opening HoursTuesday-Sunday 11 a.m. - 6 p.m., Wednesday - 8 p.m., closed on Monday.Description of the MuseumThe Fotomuseum Winterthur is building up a mainly contemporanean collection. |
