7 June 2008 – 24 August 2008 SERGEY BRATKOV – Glory DaysFollowing on from the retrospective exhibition of works by Ukrainian artist Boris Mikhailov five years ago (2003), we now present another important Ukrainian artist of the next generation: Sergey Bratkov (*1960). The exhibition includes some 130 works, giving a deep insight into Bratkov’s photographic work since 1990. Socially critical, politically motivated and yet with a lyrical edge, his photographs are a direct and at times unsparing portrayal of everyday life since the collapse of the Soviet Union. In this occasionally strident theatre of a new reality, the main players are poverty, exploitation, alcoholism, prostitution, unemployment and homelessness. Sergey Bratkov unstintingly strips away the ideological clichés of the Soviet era and the newfound aspirations of Eastern capitalism alike. The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue (in German and English).
