Trier

Roman Monuments, Cathedral of St. Peter and Church of Our Lady

ANTE ROMAM TREVERIS STETIT ANNIS MILLE TRECENTIS - ”Trier existed 1,300 years before Rome” declares the inscription on the Rotes Haus (Red House) on the Hauptmarkt. Although that is an incorrect medieval theory, it contains an element of truth.

There were indeed settlements in the valley of Trier as early as the 3rd century B.C., and Trier was the first 'town' north of the Alps to bear that label with justification. Augusta treverorum, later to be known as Trier, was founded by the Romans under Emperor Augustus around 16 B.C. close to a place sacred to the Celtic Treveri tribe.

Today, Trier’s world-class monuments and art treasures bear witness to a history going back more than 2,000 years. However, Trier is much more than a town full of antiquities; the happy coexistence of the old and the new is precisely what gives the place its special charm.
